Wig Wam - Plenty of fun, but seriously

Wig Wam from Norway allowed many time after Wig Wamania, before the fans of the eighties ‘stadium party rock’ were back in their element. Many thought the theme ‘arena stadium rock’ was into ashes, but Wig Wam proved with the album Non Stop Rock 'n' Roll, they have lost nothing of their unique, alcohol-soaked pestles and ditto ballads. Singer Glam feels the same way about.  

We heard a long time nothing from you…
Glam: "We just needed to rest for a while after all that touring . We were pretty much constantly on tour since 2001 . In 2005 alone we have done 287 shows in 2007 and we did more than 40 shows in a recreation park in Norway, which incidentally was a pleasant experience, because we could just go home every night. Furthermore we all had our own projects too. I organized a Queen tribute show, which ran very successfully in Norway and our guitarist did much produing work. So it became difficult to tune our agendas, but eventually it worked."

With the new album you switched from Napalm Records to Frontiers Records.
“Our contract runs through an official label in Norway, Frontiers has a license deal to release the album World wide, except Japan. With Napalm we were very happy, especially the opportunity they have given us not to be labeled as eternal 'Eurovision Song Contest band'. We also look forward to the cooperation with Frontiers, because as a band we fit much better between."

While the new album contains class party metal (arena hard rock), you notice that the new material sounds more mature.
"I do agree. We started without a concept with the new material. We have focused a lot on writing good songs and to let them speak for themselves. To that extent I want to describe Non Stop Rock 'n 'Roll as the essence of Wig Wam. Especially this CD is more first class teamwork as our former work. Our bass player has also co-written the songs for the first time, which brought us one step higher."

So you had no prior goal?
"Yes, our goal was to create an album that we could play live. Therefore we had the attention to use as few samples as possible. Everything had to sound original and direct so we could play it 1:1on stage."

What actually applies to your old songs, or are there songs you can not play live?
"There are. Slave To Your Love is such a song we can not play live, because it simply does not work. It is far too polished."

But basically Non Stop Rock 'n 'Roll offers, as before a big party gang, with no serious background, right?
"Not necessarily. Although it all sounds very cheerful, the lyrics are also about serious topics. Do Ya Want To Taste It refers to things you want or want to reach in life. Wall Come Down actually became a really dark song.”

Dark in the sense of Candlemass?
"No Of course not, but to our concepts it is, hahaha ..

On your Myspace site, we see a trailer for Do Ya Want To Taste It.
"The official video is not finished yet. Video clips are for a visual band like us very important and they helped us further in the past. Unfortunately, the budgets from record companies are to small for such video clips. We were lucky to find a director who was totally proud of our music and he did a great offer. If that had not happened we could not manage to finance it."

What also cost a lot of money are your expensive stage outfits.
"Yes, but is simultaneously also integral to Wig Wam. We are only satisfied with the best. What I am currently wearing I bought in San Francisco."

Speaking about America, do you know Steel Panther?
“Yes, why?"

Well, I think there are many similarities between you. The striking outfits, the profound stylistic direction, everything a little 'Larger Than Life".
"I'm only partly agree. Steel Panther is very much deliberately exaggerated and I see more similarities there with Spinal Tap."

Could you imagine to do a tour together?
"Oh yes, why not. I do not say I don’t like Steel Panther. I love also the The Darkness and they exaggerate also with everything around it. We only have a more serious approach to making music."

Wig Wam - Volop plezier, maar uiterst serieus

Wig Wam uit Noorwegen heeft zich na Wig Wamania veel tijd veroorloofd, voordat de liefhebbers van de tachtiger jaren ‘stadion party rock’ weer aan hun trekken kwamen. Dachten velen dat het thema ‘arena stadion rock’ al in de as was gelegd, bewijst Wig Wam met het album Non Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll, dat ze helemaal niets hebben ingeboet van hun eigenzinnige, alcoholdoordrenkte stampers en dito ballades. Zanger Glam denkt er net zo over.

Van jullie hebben we echt al lange tijd niets meer gehoord…
Glam: ‘We hadden na al dat touren gewoon een tijdje rust nodig. We waren sinds 2001 zo’n beetje constant op tour. Alleen al in 2005 hebben we 287 shows gedaan en in 2007 hebben we meer dan 40 shows in een recreatiepark in Noorwegen gedaan, wat overigens een prettige ervaring was, omdat we elke avond gewoon naar huis konden. Daarnaast deden we allemaal ook nog onze eigen projecten. Zo organiseerde ik een Queen tribute show, die in Noorwegen zeer succesvol verliep en onze gitarist deed veel aan produceren. Zo werd het moeilijk om onze agenda’s op elkaar af te stemmen, maar uiteindelijk is het weer gelukt.’

Jullie zijn met het nieuwe album van Napalm Records naar Frontiers Records overgestapt.
‘Ons officiële contract loopt via een label in Noorwegen, Frontiers heeft een licentie deal om het album wereldwijd uit te brengen, Japan uitgezonderd. Met Naplam waren we ook zeer tevreden, ze hebben ons vooral de kans gegeven om niet als eeuwige ‘Eurovisie Song Contest band’ bestempeld te worden. Op de samenwerking met Frontiers verheugen we ons ook, daar we daar als band ook veel beter tussen passen.’

Hoewel ook het nieuwe album klasse feest metal bevat (arena hardrock), merk je toch dat het nieuwe materiaal meer volwassen overkomt.
‘Daar ben ik het mee eens. We zijn zonder concept met de nieuwe nummers aan de gang gegaan. We hebben ons veel geconcentreerd op goede nummers schrijven en die voor zich te laten spreken. In zoverre zou ik Non Stop Rock´n´Roll als de essentie van Wig Wam willen omschrijven. Vooral is deze cd meer als voorheen een eersteklas teamwerk. Onze bassist heeft ook voor het eerst actief meegeschreven aan de nummers, wat ons nog een stapje hoger bracht.’

Dus hadden jullie vooraf helemaal geen doel voor ogen?
‘Jawel, ons doel was een album te maken, die we live konden spelen. We hadden ons daarom ook voorgenomen zo weinig mogelijk samples te gebruiken. Alles moest oorspronkelijk en directer klinken en wel zo dat we het 1:1 op het podium konden spelen.’

Wat eigenlijk ook geldt voor jullie oude nummers, of zijn er nummers die live niet te spelen vallen?
‘Die zijn er. Slave To Your Love is zo’n nummer. We kunnen dit live niet spelen, omdat het eenvoudig niet functioneert. Het is veel te gepolijst.’

Maar in grote lijnen biedt Non Stop Rock´n´ Roll, net als voorheen een grote feestbende, zonder ernstige achtergrond, toch?
‘Niet noodzakelijkerwijs. Ook al klinkt alles erg vrolijk, de teksten gaan ook over serieuze thema’s. In Do Ya Wanna Taste It gaat het om dingen die men in het leven wil hebben of wil bereiken en Wall Come Down is zowaar echt een duister nummer geworden.’

Duister in de zin van Candlemass?
‘Nee, natuurlijk niet, maar voor onze begrippen wel, hahaha..

Op jullie Myspace site zien we een trailer van Do Ya Wanna Taste It.
‘De officiële videoclip is helaas nog niet klaar, die moet nog afgemaakt worden. Videoclips zijn voor een visuele band als ons heel belangrijk en hebben ons in het verleden al verder geholpen. Helaas zijn de budgetten van platenmaatschappijen te klein voor zulke clips. Voor de nieuwe clip hadden we het geluk een regisseur te vinden die totaal prat ging op onze muziek en ons een geweldig aanbod deed. Als dat niet was gebeurd was het ons niet gelukt om het te financieren.’

Wat bij jullie ook in de papieren zal lopen, zijn jullie dure podium outfits.
‘Ja, dat klopt, maar is tegelijk ook onlosmakelijk bij Wig Wam. We zijn alleen met het beste tevreden. Wat ik op dit moment draag heb ik in San Francisco gekocht.’

Over Amerika gesproken, ken jij eigenlijk Steel Panther?
‘Jazeker, waarom?’

Nou, ik vind dat er veel overeenkomsten zijn tussen jullie. De opvallende outfits, de grondige stilistische richting, alles een beetje ‘Larger Than Life’.
‘Daar ben ik het maar voor een deel mee eens. Steel Panther doet heel bewust veel overdreven en ik zie daar meer overeenkomsten met Spinal Tap.’

Dus is een gezamenlijke tour voor jou niet denkbaar?
‘Jazeker wel, waarom niet. Ik zeg ook niet dat ik er niets aan vind. The Darkness vind ik ook geweldig en die overdrijven het ook met alles wat er omheen speelt. Wij hebben alleen een serieuzere aanpak met muziek te maken.’
