Questions asked by Jon Wilde, added to Rock Realms 23rd December 2009.
The guys are back for more! The band chat about getting rougher and purer, kinky drummers, and the musical skills of Teeny's horses...
Wig Wam was the first band we ever had the pleasure of interviewing here at Rock Realms. They've just released yet another excellent album, so we though it only right to catch up with them and have another little chat.
This time, all 4 of those crazily wonderful Norwegians - Glam, Sporty, Teeny and Flash - answered questions. Are you ready for a bout of Non Stop Rock 'N' Roll...?
Hi guys, thanks for taking a moment to answer these questions. Hope you are well?
Glam: Hi there! Yes we’re fiiiiine!
Congratulations on the new release. How does it feel having another great album in the bag?
Glam: THANX!! It feels great, yet this is only the start.
Flash: I’m really eager to present these songs to an audience, and I’m looking forward to touring again.
Teeny: It feels great to have come this far, to actually have completed the third album. It’s a difficult task the third album. I was working hard on the production side and think it turned out the way we wanted it to.
Sporty: It feels great! Our most important album...the third one: U know.
You all seem to have been busy with other projects recently, be it other bands, stage shows or similar. Was it a struggle finding time to record the new Wig Wam album?
Glam: Sure it was! But we made it didn’t we ;-) I think this wouldn’t be possible without having a break and pursuing our other careers for a period. Now our friendship and brotherhood feels fresh again and we’re all excited about getting together once more. A bit wiser, a bit hungrier and ready to BITE!!
Flash: It took some time to find time to do it, but eventually we got together and started recording. It was really exciting to see where a new album would take us this time, and I’ve got a feeling we’re only at the beginning of a new adventure.
Teeny: Not for me…..I live here ;-)…..June, July and August was booked in my studio, but we worked September and half of October as well.
Did you always know you’d make another album before the end of the decade, or were there moments you thought Wig Wam might be put on hold?
Glam: To be honest I believed at times that we wouldn’t make it back together. Having a break with no time limit sometimes ends up as an eternal break. Luckily we got together and found out that we were still attached to each other both musically and personally.
Flash: I always thought we would make another album, yet there were times I didn’t care much about it. But I was really up for it when we decided to do it.
Teeny: To be honest, I was not always sure we would make it, but as soon we finally got together I knew it was going to work. You could feel the chemistry was back.
Sporty: I knew all the time that there should be an third album. Of course!!!
How long did Non Stop Rock 'N' Roll take to write and record from start to finish?
Glam: Some foundations were made during the past two years, yet I believe most of the songs came as a natural result of us getting back together again. Creativity started to boil in the WIG WAM parts of our brains. We started to create the foundations for this album around June. Presenting demo tapes to each other and sketches of songs. Then recording started around July.
Flash: We’re always writing songs, so we had a lot to present to each other when it all came to pass. But many songs came about because of the idea of recording a new album. There’s that extra spark which kicks in when there’s music to be released. The recording took a bit more than 3 months; we spend a lot of time this time. It could‘ve been done quicker I guess.
Teeny: Recording took 4 and a half month and we brought in songs that we had in our sleeve from before. Some we kept, some we tore apart and changed drastically.
Was it hard work, or did it come together smoothly?
Glam: I think this album was the easiest we’ve done so far. Especially since we all were a 100% into the making of it. We were working as a team and the three of us songwriters did not compete. Our only mission was to make the best album possible. Still you tend to fight for your own darlings. But it was a smooth fight. No scratching or biting this time ;-)
Flash: It’s always hard work to make an album. You’re your own worst critic, but at the same time it’s always fun and exciting to make music together. There were a lot of ideas this time which didn’t make the album. It’s a shame sometimes, but that’s how it works.
Teeny: It’s a good job, but it takes time to get were you wanna go sometimes.
Were there any stories or concepts in mind during the writing of the album?
Glam:No! Just songs and riffs.
Flash: Exactly!
Teeny: Non Stop R&R!!!!!
We feel that Non Stop Rock 'N' Roll shows a more mature side to the Wig Wam sound. Is that something you aimed for with this release, or is that just the way it turned out?
Glam: Not really. We simply did what felt natural. Even though we agreed on making a rougher album without focusing on hits. We just followed our hearts and instincts.
Flash: It’s all about having a good time and entering some kind of Wig Wam fantasy world together with the music. Wig Wam have made a step forwards and got better at what we do. I see the Wig Wam sound this time as better and bigger.
Teeny: We talked about it when we started…..not to mature, but to keep it simple and go straight for the core. Not too many overdubs on this album. Musically we have matured and so has the production, I think.
How do you think it compares to your other releases?
Glam: A bit more wholehearted - production wise - and a purer album I think. The guitar sound on Non Stop RnR is really excellent, and I think we managed to keep the songs straighter and more musically interesting for our own sake as well.
Flash: The producer (Teeny) has obviously evolved in a direction where he can be compared to any producer in rock ’n roll. And the album carries his signature. In addition we’ve all got better at writing songs and handling our instruments, so the sky is the limit.
Teeny: Well, we still have the same sense of humour, but we don’t put it in our music as much as we did before.
'Still I’m Burning' has Trond (Teeny) Holter singing vocals. How did that come about, and is there a version out there with Glam singing lead?
Glam: Teeny had recorded some demos, and on Still I’m Burning he had done the vocals himself. It sounded amazing and cool, and we managed to talk him into doing the lead vocals himself. I did not record any lead vocal for Still I’m Burning. And I hope Teeny will do the song live as well. It would give me a couple of minutes break to play a chess game backstage with the crew ;-)
Flash: Agreed.
Teeny: It’s the demo version you hear on the record. I played it for the guys and they liked it. Glam wanted too keep it with my vocals on. I don’t have a dream bout being a singer or anything…..we just kept it. I mean, we have the best singer in the business in our band. Told you we still have a sense of humour ;-)
Is the slightly heavier, hard rocking sound something you’d like to explore further as a band?
Glam: Don’t know. Next album might be pure disco ;-) If we record another album, that is. Nothing is certain. We might die tomorrow in a plane crash ;-) But if we make another album, that album will capture where we are at that specific moment in time.
Flash: Not necessarily, but we’ve been inspired to some point by new acts who use low tuned guitars etc. It’s always interesting to explore new territories, but the next album might also be an acoustic one. Who knows?
Teeny: I don’t think too much about it….writing has to come naturally……so next record maybe something else.
Did either of the other guys have a go at singing lead on any tracks?
Glam: Flash and I share the lead vocals on Gotta Get It On. We have tried to convince Sporty that he’s a great singer, but we’ll see. Maybe he'll throw in some vocals in the future. The only vocals recorded from him up until now are moans and heavy breathing from the drum microphones. If you listen closely you’ll hear him at some parts, swearing and moaning ha ha, it’s actually pretty kinky girls :)
Flash: Glam and I also share the lead on the verses of “Chasing Rainbows.”
Teeny: Yes, Flash singing the verses on Chasing Rainbows together with Glam.
Sporty: Ha ha Glam :-) Maybe my “heavy breathing” should be added as a bonus track on our fourth album?... “Kinky sounds from a kinky drummer”. Actually the guys have tried to persuade me to put my wonderful voice on a track, but it hasn’t happened yet. Maybe in the future ;-) Or as a part of our live show. U never know ;-)
Do you think Trond’s return to playing with Dream Police had any influence on the way this album was written and performed?
Glam: I think Teeny has to answer that question.
Flash: Maybe….maybe not
Teeny: It’s hard for me to say…..but, yes I think so…..but it's also about development. You want to explore, and that goes for everyone I think.
On that note, has Glam’s work with ‘The Show Must Go On’, or Flash and Sporty’s other work altered the way Wig Wam work?
Glam: I have to speak for myself. And yes, I believe THE SHOW MUST GO ON Queen show has made me a better singer and inspired me music wise. It has also made me discover some new vocal techniques called twang.
Flash: Never really thought of that. Maybe it has?
Teeny: Yes. It’s in all of our natures to try and progress.
Sporty: It could be. In a positive way I think. When touring close to 7 days a week over a long period it is ok to just try to civilize your self. Get back to the "real world". Before start a "new round". I think it’s good for everyone.
Where did the ‘kid`s choir’ come from on ‘Chasing Rainbows’?
Glam: It must’ve come from heaven ;-) It was Flash's idea I think.
Flash: When I did the demo for the song, the kids were playing outside. I just wanted them to experience their own voices on tape really. But it was fun to watch their faces when I multi-tracked their voices and it started to sound big. They thought they were professional singers all at once. But the idea stuck with the final recording.
Teeny: Flash kids and my kids are singing on that song and gave it a boost I think.
Did they enjoy the experience of performing with/for you?
Glam: Did they, Flash?
Flash: Yes.. he he, see previous answer….
Teeny: They are doing stuff like that all the time and it feels perfectly natural for them.
Are there any other guest performers on the album you’d like to mention?
Glam: Not that I know of, other than Eirikur Hauksson from Artch doing some background vocals and Teeny’s wife. Apart from that...only the sound of Teeny’s horses.
Flash: We did plan to have some different background singers, but everybody was on holiday this summer. We had to do the work ourselves.
Teeny: It’s the usual people we use for background vocals you know. Eirikur Hauksson and Trude Holter (my wife)…… very gifted singers.
Do you have any favourite moments or tracks?
Glam: My favourite tracks are WALLS COME DOWN, just loooooove that riff, and Do Ya Wanna Taste It. The good thing is that I change favourites every time I listen to it. This album grows!
Flash: It’s always a thrill to throw in ideas from the sofa when Teeny does his solos. I’m amazed every time this guy “chews” his guitar.
Teeny: Many, but to name one or two, it must be NonStop R&R…..its a live killer and it got the riffs and a cool chorus. I also like the guitar solo ;-) It has all the stuff a guitar player needs to get off!!!! I also think that Still I’m Burning is special. I like it very much……..and the list goes on……
Sporty: My favourite tracks are Walls Come down, Still I'm Burning and Do Ya Wanna Taste It. I think Still I'm Burning should be our next single from the album ;-)
Sell us the record (preferably in 10 words or less...)
Glam: You want a soundtrack to your party? You want a soundtrack to your love-making? You wanna feel the live atmosphere like you’re in the first row of a rock’n roll concert? You want the ultimate music adrenalin rush? This is the album!!! Buy three! One for the road, one for the party and one for the bedtime adventures….
Flash: Non Stop Rock ’n Roll. The album you can’t miss before you die.
Teeny: Its food for your soul, Its NonStop R&R!!!!!!
Sporty: If you want good guitar based energetic Rock'n Roll. Here U are. My pleasure :-)
How did Frontiers Records get involved with the album, and at what stage of the process did they come onboard?
Glam: Frontiers have been trying to cut a deal with us for many years. But they always got to the party a bit late. This time their timing was perfect, and we wanted to release the album in the whole world at the same time. So here we are.
Flash: That’s right.
Teeny: Our Norwegian record company made contact with them early this year.
Do you plan to make videos for any of the songs?
Glam: A music video? Do they still make them? They sure as hell don’t show them on TV anymore. Not rock’n roll videos. It would be fun, but convincing a record company to finance a rock’n roll video these days is like convincing a 50 year old to give birth to another baby. But you never know… We haven’t planned anything.
Flash: No plans yet.
Sporty: We have talked about it. But as Glam says, where to show em?... Actually we present live shows.
Who did the artwork? We love the guitar car!
Glam: We had some ideas for a guitar car, and Flash approached a friend of his to do it. Then this art guy from Sweden appeared, and did the whole thing. His name is Sinischa and will probably be one of our partners in the future.
Teeny: Great cover!!! Flash and Glam and some other designers.
You’ve got a release show planned on January 23rd. Any special plans for the night?
Glam: Yeah! All hell will break loose. We offer Meet & Greets and present our new live show for the very first time. From what I’ve heard fans are flying in from all over the world. That’s such an honour!
Teeny: I haven’t thought about it yet……maybe a party……I think so ;-)
Sporty: Of course!!. It will be a show you'll never forget! We are ready as hell! Be prepared!
Is a full tour going to follow? Do you expect to pay a visit to the UK, and perhaps America, Japan and more?
Teeny: It’s all in the making as we speak. We have offers coming in from all these countries with the exception of the US……not yet anyway.
Sporty: We would really love to go to the US. Really. Planning 2010 is ongoing right now so let's hope that we will visit both UK, Japan and the US in 2010.
Do you party hard when you are out on tour, or are you all sensible family men?
Teeny: We are all sensible family men who party hard…….he he. No, we have been around some decades now and that lifestyle is long gone.
Sporty: You can't party every day if you're gonna deliver good R'R shows. But we have some days off in between U now... That's answer enough right? :-)
Who is the most Non Stop Rock ‘N’ Roll out of the four of you?
Teeny: Me of course ;-)
Sporty: No, I am ;-)
Are you up to anything exciting over Christmas?
Teeny: Apart from a club gig with Dream Police I’m home with the family. There snow now and I hope it will last until Christmas Eve.
Sporty: I'll stay with my family and just relax and prepare myself to ROCK U all in 2010!
I’m tapping into your guru powers now... Is 2010 going to be a good year for music?
Teeny: I know it will ;-)
Sporty: It starts on the 22nd of January ;-)
Any question I’ve missed? If so, what’s the answer?
Teeny: The answer is…I know and thank very much…you shouldn’t have….its too much ;-)
Sporty: Yes, Sporty is the cutest guy in the band. U're right ;-)
What are you up to once you’ve finished answering these questions?
Teeny: I'm going to have a recording session with some friends on The Rock Ranch.
Sporty: I'm on my way to the rehearsal place to prepare my 2010 drum solo...
Anything else you’d like to say to your fans?
Teeny: I’m still burning to see you all out there soon.
Sporty: Be prepared! We really long to meet you out there, and we will not disappoint U with our 2010 show. And I wish U all a Happy Christmas and a Happy new R'R year! Love Sporty
Thanks for your time :)
Thank you Jon! And from all of us to all of you: A Merry Merry Christmas! See you all out there in 2010
